Composting Worms and Worm Castings

Why worms? 

"Yard trimmings and food residuals together constitute 24 percent of the U.S. municipal solid waste stream. That's a lot of waste to send to landfills when it could become useful and environmentally beneficial compost instead!" (http://www.epa.gov/)
As they "eat", or process, the equivalent of roughly half their body weight in waste every day, worms transform that waste into castings, a rich soil amendment.  Composting means less mass in our landfills and these wonderful castings mean no use of petroleum-based fertilizers - for organic and sustainable gardening.
