Worm Castings - 1lb. bag
100% worm castings screened at 1/4 inch. Castings have a neutral (7) pH and are rich is humus, calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Water soluble, they allow for immediate release of the nutrients.
-
Some uses:
- As a top dressing: spread a 1/2 inch layer of castings around plants, mulch, and water.
- To grow seeds: mix 3 parts of age compost or coir fiber to 1 part castings*.
- As a potting mix: mix 2 parts of age compost, 1 part castings, 1/2 part vermiculite.
- You can also apply castings around the base of fruit trees to help maintain moisture levels. Minerals will leach directly into the soil.
* Mix with your soil at a 20 to 30% ratio (a study led by Dr. Edwards of Ohio State University showed that adding over 40% did not produce significantly better results on plants).

Keith Addison (http://journeytoforever.org/) sums the benefits of using worm castings: "Worm casts also contain five times more nitrogen, seven times more phosphorus, and 11 times more potassium than ordinary soil, the main minerals needed for plant growth, but the large numbers of beneficial soil micro-organisms in worm casts have at least as much to do with it. The casts are also rich in humic acids, which condition the soil, have a perfect pH balance, and contain plant growth factors similar to those found in seaweed. There's nothing better to put in your garden!"
